The Candy House

Jennifer Egan

Welcome to the USA

The mesmerizing tale of The Candy House commences with the brilliant Bix Bouton, a tech magnate so successful that he’s reached the status of a “tech demi-god,” known to all on a first-name basis. Restless and yearning for a new idea, the 40-year-old Bix stumbles upon a conversation group, mainly comprised of Columbia professors, one of whom is exploring the concept of downloading or “externalizing” memory in the year 2010.

Fast forward a decade, and Bix’s groundbreaking technology, “Own Your Unconscious,” has swept the masses. This innovation grants access to every memory an individual has ever had, allowing them to share these memories in exchange for access to others’. However, not everyone succumbs to its allure.

In a spellbinding narrative, Jennifer Egan weaves together the repercussions of Own Your Unconscious through the lives of various characters, whose paths crisscross over several decades. The Candy House is not only intellectually dazzling but also remarkably poignant, serving as a testament to the enduring human desires for genuine connections, love, family, privacy, and redemption.

In Egan’s extraordinary imaginative world, there are “counters” who monitor and exploit desires, and then there are “eluders,” individuals who comprehend the cost of taking a bite of the Candy House. Egan introduces these characters through a stunning array of narrative styles, ranging from omniscient and first-person plural perspectives to duets of voices, an epistolary chapter, and even a chapter composed of tweets.

Not every story needs to be told.
